The $100 Fee Is Not the First Step
You've completed your suspension period, paid your fines, and you're ready to reinstate. Mississippi's reinstatement fee is $100, paid to the Driver Service Bureau at the Department of Public Safety. But if you walk into a DPS office or attempt online payment before clearing every underlying violation and ensuring your SR-22 filing is active, the system will reject your payment. The fee is the final step, not the first.
The procedural reality: Mississippi DPS will not accept reinstatement payment until the suspension cause is fully resolved. For DUI suspensions, that means your SR-22 certificate must already be on file with the Safety Responsibility Division. For uninsured-at-fault accidents causing damages over $500, the same SR-22 requirement applies. For unpaid tickets or failure-to-appear warrants, every outstanding balance must be cleared through the issuing court before DPS will process the $100 fee. Drivers who pay the fee first discover their license remains suspended because the underlying blocker was never addressed.

What DPS Checks Before Accepting Payment
The Driver Service Bureau runs a compliance check before processing your $100 reinstatement fee. The system verifies that your suspension period has ended, that all court-ordered requirements are satisfied, and that any required SR-22 filing is active. If any element is missing, the payment is rejected and your license remains suspended.
For DUI suspensions, the SR-22 certificate must be filed by your insurance carrier directly with the Safety Responsibility Division before you pay the reinstatement fee. Mississippi Code Title 63 Chapter 15 requires SR-22 filing for reinstatement after implied-consent or DUI suspension, and for uninsured at-fault accidents causing damages over $500. The filing period is 3 years from the date the certificate is filed, not from the date of conviction. If your carrier has not yet transmitted the SR-22 to DPS, your reinstatement payment will be rejected even if you bring proof of insurance to the counter.
For suspensions triggered by unpaid tickets, failure to appear, or child support arrears, the underlying violation must be cleared through the issuing court or agency. DPS does not waive court fines when you pay the $100 reinstatement fee. If you owe $200 in unpaid tickets to a municipal court, that $200 must be paid to the court before DPS will accept your reinstatement fee. The systems are not connected; clearing one does not automatically clear the other.

The SR-22 Filing Requirement for DUI and Uninsured Suspensions

The SR-22 is not insurance. It is a certificate your insurance carrier files electronically with the Mississippi Safety Responsibility Division certifying that you carry at least the state minimum liability coverage: $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage. You do not file the SR-22 yourself; the carrier does.
The 3-year SR-22 filing period begins the day the certificate is filed, not the day of your conviction or the day your suspension ends. If your suspension period ended 6 months ago but you only filed the SR-22 today, the 3-year clock starts today. During the filing period, your insurance must remain continuous. If your policy lapses or is cancelled, the carrier notifies DPS and your license is suspended again immediately. Most standard carriers will not write SR-22 policies for recently-suspended drivers. You will shop the non-standard market: carriers like The General, Dairyland, Bristol West, GAINSCO, Progressive, and Direct Auto write SR-22 policies in Mississippi and specialize in high-risk drivers.
Clearing Unpaid Tickets and Court Holds
Unpaid traffic tickets, failure-to-appear warrants, and child support arrears create holds in the DPS system that block reinstatement even after your suspension period ends. The $100 reinstatement fee does not clear these holds. You must resolve each one separately through the issuing court or agency.
Start by requesting a driving record abstract from DPS. The abstract lists every suspension, every hold, and every outstanding violation tied to your license. If the abstract shows unpaid tickets, contact the municipal or justice court that issued the citation. Pay the fine directly to that court. If the abstract shows a failure-to-appear warrant, contact the court to schedule a hearing or pay the fine and resolve the warrant. Once the court clears the hold, it notifies DPS electronically. The update typically appears in the DPS system within 1–3 business days, but some courts still mail paper notifications, which can take 7–10 days.
For child support arrears, contact the Mississippi Department of Human Services or the court that issued the support order. The suspension will not lift until the arrearage is paid or a payment plan is approved and current. Once DHS notifies DPS that you are in compliance, the hold is removed and you can proceed to reinstatement.
SR-22 Filing Period
3 years
Mississippi requires 3 years of continuous SR-22 filing for DUI, implied-consent refusal, and uninsured at-fault accidents over $500. The period begins the day the certificate is filed, not the day of conviction. Any lapse during the 3 years triggers immediate re-suspension.

How to Pay the Reinstatement Fee
Once all underlying violations are cleared and your SR-22 filing is active (if required), you can pay the $100 reinstatement fee. Mississippi DPS accepts payment in person at any Driver Service Bureau office, by mail, or online through the DPS website. In-person payment is processed immediately and your license is reinstated the same day if all requirements are met. Online and mail payments typically process within 1–3 business days.
Bring your driving record abstract, proof that all court fines are paid, and confirmation that your SR-22 filing is active (your insurance carrier can provide a copy of the filed certificate). If you are paying in person, the clerk will verify compliance in real time. If you are paying online or by mail and any requirement is still outstanding, the payment will be rejected and refunded, and your license will remain suspended until you clear the blocker and resubmit.
What Happens After You Pay
After DPS processes your $100 reinstatement fee and verifies compliance, your driving privileges are restored immediately. You do not receive a new physical license card by mail; your existing license becomes valid again. If your physical license was confiscated during the suspension, you can request a duplicate at any Driver Service Bureau office for the standard duplicate fee.
If your reinstatement required SR-22 filing, your insurance must remain continuous for the full 3-year filing period. Any lapse or cancellation during that period triggers immediate re-suspension, and you will face a new reinstatement process with a new $100 fee. Set up automatic payment with your carrier and monitor your policy status closely. Most carriers send lapse notices 10–15 days before cancellation, giving you a narrow window to cure the payment and avoid re-suspension. Miss that window and you start over: new SR-22 filing, new reinstatement fee, new suspension period if the lapse exceeded 30 days. Compare Mississippi SR-22 carriers that write reinstated drivers to find a policy you can sustain for the full 3-year mandate.
